WOODZ’s “Drowning” Achieves Chart-Topping Success and Music Show Win Years After Release

In a remarkable turn of events, WOODZ's song "Drowning" has finally clinched its first music show trophy on SBS's "Inkigayo," over two years after its initial release. This victory comes after a gradual rise to the top of the charts, a testament to the song's enduring appeal and WOODZ's growing popularity.

Released on April 26, 2023, as part of his "OO-LI" mini-album, "Drowning" initially didn't make waves. However, an unexpected catalyst propelled the song into the spotlight: WOODZ's enlistment in the military. His performance of "Drowning" on a special Armed Forces Day episode of KBS2's "Immortal Songs 2" on October 4, 2024, went viral, sparking a surge in popularity.

The viral performance led to "Drowning" debuting on the Melon Top 100 chart less than two weeks later. The song steadily climbed the charts, breaking into the Top 10 at the beginning of 2025 and eventually reaching the coveted #1 spot. This chart-topping success culminated in WOODZ securing a music show win on "Inkigayo," outcompeting strong contenders despite being away serving in the military. The other nominees for first place were LE SSERAFIM’s “HOT,” and ZO ZAZZ’s “Don’t you know.” WOODZ ultimately took the win with a total of 5,179 points.

The success of "Drowning" also highlights a potential shift in the K-pop landscape. As IATFB points out, the rise of "organic" hit songs from singer-songwriters, bands, balladeers, and indie artists suggests a growing public interest in music outside of mainstream K-pop. Notably, this win is especially significant considering the song was self-composed by Woods. Woods' self-composed song "Drawing" topped the Melon Top 100 chart.

This win has been a long time coming for WOODZ, who has consistently delivered exceptional music. His dedication to crafting his own unique musical identity is evident in tracks like "Drowning." Currently serving in the military, he is scheduled to be discharged on July 21 and will be performing at Japan's largest music festival 'Summer Sonic 2025' in August. The rising anticipation for his return to the stage is palpable.
