Tanner Houck’s Struggles: What’s Next for the Red Sox Pitcher After Disastrous Outing?

The Boston Red Sox are facing tough questions about the future of pitcher Tanner Houck after a disastrous performance against the Detroit Tigers. Once a promising All-Star, Houck's recent struggles have reached a critical point, leaving fans and analysts wondering what the next steps should be.

In a game that saw the Detroit Tigers crush the Red Sox 14-2, Houck allowed a staggering 11 runs in just 2 1/3 innings. This marks the second time this season he's surrendered double-digit runs in such a short span. "This is definitely probably the most lost I've ever been," Houck confessed to reporters, highlighting the depth of his current struggles.

The trouble began early, with Gleyber Torres hitting a two-run home run off Houck in the first inning. However, the real damage occurred in a horrific third inning where Detroit exploded for nine runs before Houck could record a second out. Key moments included Riley Greene's three-run "Little League" home run thanks to an error by Wilyer Abreu, and a subsequent three-run shot by Trey Sweeney.

Houck's ineffectiveness is reflected in his season stats: an 8.04 ERA and an opponent OPS of .920, the third-highest among MLB starters. The Red Sox are now only 2-7 in his starts, further emphasizing the impact of his struggles.

Alex Cora, the Red Sox manager, acknowledged the need for a serious evaluation. "We will talk about it, of course," he said, hinting at a potential change in Houck's role. Cora pointed to Houck's inconsistency, noting flashes of brilliance interspersed with disastrous outings. He specifically mentioned issues with Houck's pitch location and effectiveness. "There were a lot of pitches in the middle zone. The split, it was up. They put some good swings on it, the slider, he wasn't able to get it across home plate and down in the zone to lefties."

The question now is whether to give Houck time to reset, potentially in a different role, or to explore other options within the rotation. With the emergence of rookie Hunter Dobbins and the anticipated return of Walker Buehler, the Red Sox have viable alternatives.

While Houck struggles, other players had moments to shine. Despite his error, Wilyer Abreu managed to hit his 11th home run of the season. Similarly, Sean Newcomb's extended relief appearance, pitching 5 2/3 innings, prevented further strain on the bullpen.

The Red Sox face a critical decision regarding Tanner Houck. Will they give the struggling pitcher another chance to prove himself, or will they look for alternative solutions to bolster their pitching rotation?
