Snoop Dogg’s Surprise Album ‘Iz It A Crime?’ Sparks Debate, Makes Peace with Spotify

Snoop Dogg has dropped a bombshell on the music world with his surprise album, 'Iz It A Crime?'. The 21-track project, released on Death Row Records and gamma, isn't just a collection of new music; it's a statement, a reflection, and a challenge to perceptions of the iconic rapper. But the release isn't just about the music; it also marks a turning point in Snoop Dogg's relationship with Spotify, making peace with the service and releasing his new album on the platform after previously being a vocal critic.

The album, his 21st solo studio effort, arrives just six months after 'Missionary' with Dr. Dre, showcasing Snoop's relentless creative energy. 'Iz It A Crime?' features collaborations with heavy hitters like Pharrell Williams, Wiz Khalifa, and Sexyy Red, further solidifying Snoop's status as a collaborative force in hip-hop.

At a listening event, Snoop revealed that 'Iz It A Crime?' is a cathartic experience. Tracks like "My Friend" (featuring Denaun) pay tribute to family members, while "Can’t Get Enough" is dedicated to his wife, Shante Broadus. He also uses "ShutYoBitchAssUp" to address past tensions with Suge Knight, demonstrating a willingness to confront his past.

The album title itself is a statement. Snoop explained the title is a response to backlash he received for his changed stance on President Donald Trump, after Trump pardoned Michael “Harry O” Harris, Snoop's friend and one of the original founders of Death Row Records. He asks, "Is it a crime for me to take care of people, to love people, to be there for people? Is it a crime for me to be me?" This introspective questioning adds another layer to the album, prompting listeners to consider their perceptions of Snoop Dogg.

Beyond the music, the pairing of the album with an extended visual that blends music video and documentary elements, highlights Snoop’s creative ambitions. The visual shows him at the Paris Olympics with the United States Men’s Basketball team, speaking with Rev Run, and performing globally, underscoring his impact on popular culture.

Snoop Dogg's reconciliation with Spotify is another key aspect of this release. After criticizing streaming economics, he engaged in discussions with the platform and ultimately partnered with them to support 'Iz It a Crime?'. This suggests a shift in Snoop's perspective on the evolving music industry landscape.

'Iz It A Crime?' showcases Snoop Dogg's ability to reinvent himself while staying true to his roots. Paired with his strategic move to embrace Spotify, the album marks a significant chapter in the career of this enduring hip-hop icon.
