Seattle Music Scene Mourns the Loss of Kevin Diers, Radio Host and Wrestling Advocate
The Seattle music and wrestling communities are mourning the unexpected passing of Kevin Diers, a beloved radio host, announcer, and fervent supporter of local talent. Diers, who was 39, passed away on Wednesday, leaving behind a legacy of passion, kindness, and unwavering dedication to the scenes he championed.
A Voice for Metal and Local Music
Diers was a prominent figure at KISW, where he hosted the popular "Metal Shop" and "Loud and Local" shows for many years. He was known for his encyclopedic knowledge of metal music and his commitment to showcasing emerging artists from the Pacific Northwest. Mike Savoia of Savoia Photography, who covered KISW events alongside Diers for nearly two decades, remembers him fondly. "Me, Stephanie, the KISW/Audacy family and soooooo many others of you reading this will be missing you on the air and at concerts/radio events. RIP. Hope you're at peace in the metal heavens."
Beyond Radio: A Champion of Community
Diers' influence extended far beyond the airwaves. He was deeply involved in the Seattle music scene, writing for The Stranger and supporting various podcasts. Cathy Faulkner, a former KISW host whom Diers later recommended for a position at KUOW, described him as "an amazing, gentle, kind soul with an amazing work ethic and an obsession and passion for the local community."
He also had a passion for professional wrestling, serving as a ring announcer, social media creator, and podcast host for DEFY Wrestling in Seattle since its inception in 2017. "He was a fervent advocate for building local community through art and collaboration. His humor, warmth, and enthusiasm will be dearly missed by all of us," said DEFY Founder Jim Perry Gilmer.
Remembering a 'Bright Light'
Stephen Howie, KUOW Online Editor/Producer and Diers' former professor, remembered him as a "bright light" with an unwavering passion for music and radio. Arvid Hokanson, KUOW’s director of audience, echoed this sentiment, calling Diers "a team player who cared deeply about broadcasting and the art of radio."
Kevin Diers' passing is a significant loss for the Seattle arts community. He will be remembered for his infectious enthusiasm, his commitment to supporting local talent, and his genuine kindness. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire and uplift those who knew him.
