Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2025: Snubs, Surprises, and Chubby Checker’s Long-Awaited Induction

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class of 2025 has been announced, sparking excitement and debate among music fans. While celebrated artists like Cyndi Lauper, The White Stripes, Soundgarden, OutKast, Bad Company, Joe Cocker and Salt-N-Pepa are set to be inducted, the list of omissions has raised eyebrows, particularly the repeated absence of Mariah Carey and other deserving artists like Oasis and Phish.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of this year's inductees is Chubby Checker, the legendary singer of "The Twist." Despite being eligible since 1986, Checker finally receives his due. He expressed his unwavering support for the Rock Hall being located in Cleveland, citing Alan Freed's pivotal role in popularizing rock 'n' roll. "I always thought the Rock Hall should be in Cleveland because of dear Alan Freed and the days of rock ‘n’ roll and the beginnings of it all," Checker stated, highlighting Freed's championing of original artists.

Checker also recounted campaigning for the Rock Hall to be located in Cleveland due to Alan Freed and his dedication to rock n roll despite his career taking off in Philadelphia. He plans to attend the induction ceremony on Nov 8 in Los Angeles.

However, the Rock Hall's choices haven't pleased everybody. An article by Rolling Stone suggests that some voters are not understanding Mariah Carey's importantce as well some just may not believe she has that same essence other artists like Outkast have.

Another perspective, from a separate article, wonders what Mariah Carey needs to do to finally get inducted. Despite her staggering career achievements – 15 studio albums, countless awards (including 5 Grammys), and over 200 million records sold – Carey finds herself on the outside looking in. The article points out that she became eligible for nomination since 2016, and she has since been nominated twice.

The article emphasizes, "Her record sales alone are enough to warrant induction, as there are plenty of artists in the Hall who haven't reached 100 million sold, let alone 200 million." Her influence across generations, even leading to collaborations with artists like Justin Bieber, solidifies her legendary status.

The snub of Oasis also raises questions. Being a British band whose hitmaking peak was in the Nineties are two factors that sometimes challenge the Hall of Fame.
