Pentagram’s Bobby Liebling: From Doom Metal Icon to Viral Sensation

Pentagram, the doom metal band fronted by Bobby Liebling, has experienced a recent surge in popularity, but not in the way they might have expected. After decades of relative obscurity, a viral TikTok video featuring Liebling has catapulted him into the mainstream spotlight, leading to unexpected consequences.

The viral clip, which shows Liebling with a wide-eyed stare during a performance, has become a meme used to depict anything from being spaced out to being amazed. This sudden fame has caught Liebling off guard. "The whole thing flipped me out at first," Liebling admitted in an interview with Altars of Metal. "It was pretty weird. I always had this dream of maybe someday I can have a post on Instagram or Facebook, and it will be viral. And it was like… Jesus, wow…Careful what you wish for."

The band's profile has undeniably risen. Liebling describes being recognized everywhere he goes. "The band’s profile went through the roof immediately. And we got stopped in airports by TSA people, and we’ve gotten stopped on planes by pilots coming out of the cockpit to say hello, and soccer moms in the airport and groups of little kids and stuff like that. It’s pretty wild, man."

A viral TikTok seems to have bolstered the fame of the singer and band.

While the viral fame hasn't immediately translated into increased ticket sales, as their tours were already largely sold out, the band has experienced some very tangible effects. "People are clawing, trying to get through crowds. And you got police escorts surrounding you to get to a van when you leave a gig. It was wild, man. It still is," Liebling stated, highlighting the intensity of the newfound attention.

Despite the initial shock, Liebling seems to be embracing the unexpected fame. "It’s really fun, though, playing music for over half a century and then becoming famous for being a joke." He acknowledges the absurdity of it all, yet appreciates the recognition, however unconventional it may be.

Pentagram is currently touring, giving fans the chance to see the band live and experience the "viral sensation" firsthand. The question is, will this newfound fame translate into long-term success for Pentagram, or will it be a fleeting moment in the spotlight?
