Pearl Jam’s ‘The Last of Us’ EP: A Touching Tribute to Connection and Loss
Pearl Jam has released a poignant new EP, directly inspired by the profound connection between their music and HBO’s acclaimed series, 'The Last of Us'. The four-track collection beautifully weaves together the band's history with the video game franchise, offering fans both familiar favorites and fresh interpretations.

The EP features the original studio version of "Future Days" from their 2013 album Lightning Bolt, a song that has become synonymous with the emotional core of 'The Last of Us'. Also included are "All or None" from Riot Act (2002), a live rendition of "Future Days" recorded at the 2024 Ohana Festival, and a reimagined version of No Code’s "Present Tense," aptly titled "Present Tense (Redux)."
"Future Days" holds a special place in the hearts of 'The Last of Us' fans. In 'The Last of Us Part II,' Joel (played by Pedro Pascal in the HBO series) plays the song for Ellie (Bella Ramsey), creating one of the game's most unforgettable and heart-wrenching moments. This scene underscores themes of connection, vulnerability, and ultimately, loss. The song subtly reappears in season two of HBO's adaptation, with Ellie strumming the first line on a guitar in a Seattle theater, an emotional echo of the game's impactful scene.
The band first acknowledged the significance of the song to fans back in 2020 when Eddie Vedder delivered a moving performance of "Future Days" at The Game Awards, paying tribute to the game's impact.
This EP isn’t just a compilation; it’s a conversation between the band and their fans, as well as a nod to the cultural phenomenon that is 'The Last of Us'. While the band's website claims the EP is “music inspired by” the show and the game, the timeline suggests they influenced each other. Regardless, the synergy is undeniable. Alongside its streaming release, a limited edition 12-inch vinyl version is exclusively available through Pearl Jam’s Ten Club.
The release coincides with Pearl Jam's ongoing 2025 global tour in support of their twelfth studio album, Dark Matter. The tour has been marked by standout performances, including a rendition of “Black” in Nashville alongside Peter Frampton.
With its blend of familiar tracks and reimagined classics, the 'Last of Us' EP is a must-listen for both Pearl Jam devotees and fans of the acclaimed series. It's a testament to the power of music in storytelling and the emotional connections that can be forged across different mediums. What are your thoughts on this special release?
