Lorde’s Electrifying Return: ‘Virgin’ Album, New Single ‘What Was That,’ and More

Lorde is back, and she's diving deep into a new era with her upcoming album 'Virgin.' After a four-year hiatus since 'Solar Power,' the Grammy-winning artist is ready to captivate fans once again with a bold new sound and unflinching honesty. The lead single, 'What Was That,' offers a taste of what's to come: a blend of pulsing synth-pop, introspective lyrics, and a raw vulnerability that solidifies Lorde's place as an innovator in the pop landscape.

'Virgin' is set to drop in June, marking a significant shift for Lorde. The album cover itself is a statement – a blue-tinted X-ray of a woman's pelvis, representing transparency and femininity. This daring imagery reflects the album's core themes: raw honesty, primal energy, and unflinching self-reflection. As Lorde herself stated, the album is "100% WRITTEN IN BLOOD," suggesting a deeply personal and cathartic creative process.

"What Was That" has already made waves, with its DIY music video filmed in Washington Square Park. The spontaneous performance, which drew a massive crowd, underscored Lorde's commitment to connecting with her fans on a personal level. The song's lyrics delve into themes of heartbreak, self-image, and the search for meaning in the aftermath of tumultuous experiences.

According to The New York Times, the new single marks a return to form for Lорde with many describing her new work to be "dreamy with an electropop and synth-pop soundscape.” The song is not necessarily anything new, but certainly captures the attention after a long hiatus from the artist.

Lorde also credits Charli XCX as an inspiration, whose fearless approach to her own music pushed Lorde to further define her own artistic vision. This creative synergy highlights the supportive community among female artists in the industry. The album also marks a departure from Lorde's usual collaborator Jack Antonoff, with Jim-E Stack, Fabiana Palladino, Andrew Aged, Buddy Ross, Dan Nigro and Dev Hynes stepping in as producers this time around.

In an interview with Document Journal, Lorde revealed a struggle with body image stating “I'm not going to put anything out until I'm in my body the way I know I'm supposed to be, to be able to do my work.'"

'Virgin' promises to be a pivotal moment in Lorde's career, explore new sonic territories and solidifying her place as one of contemporary music's boldest voices. Stay tuned for its release and prepare to delve into the transparent world Lorde has created.
