Kirk Hammett’s Humility: Metallica Guitarist Admits He ‘Should Be a Lot Better’

Metallica's lead guitarist, Kirk Hammett, a name synonymous with metal mastery, recently confessed a surprising sentiment: he believes he "should be a lot better" at playing guitar. This honest admission, given in an exclusive interview with Metal Hammer, has sparked a wave of discussion among fans and fellow musicians alike.

Hammett acknowledged being impressed by the skill of many modern guitar players showcased on platforms like YouTube. He pondered why these talented individuals aren't working professionally, considering the constraints of jobs, families, and other life commitments that might hold them back. "I see a lot of [people on YouTube] and I’m frigging impressed," he stated. "There are some amazing players out there, where I’m just shaking my head like, ‘Why aren’t these guys working? Why aren’t they recording?’ But then I think… maybe they can’t. Maybe they have jobs, or families, or something they can’t leave behind."

Despite his widespread recognition and numerous accolades, including being ranked among the best guitarists in metal, Hammett maintains a grounded perspective. This statement reflects a level of humility rarely seen in musicians of his stature: "I should be a lot better than I am," he admits, adding with a touch of humor, "I see some of these younger guitar players and I’m like, ‘Where did I go wrong?’ Ha ha!"

Hammett elaborated on his playing style, emphasizing feel over technical prowess. He explained that his approach is rooted in raw emotion and a genuine connection with the music. "It’s hard for me to be objective or subjective for where I stand in all of this. I just know that I like playing the way I do; I know if I keep on playing from my cajónes, somebody is going to be able to relate to that."

This isn't the first time Hammett's contributions have been acknowledged. Phil Demmel, known for his work with Kerry King and ex-Machine Head, previously hailed Hammett as "the master of the memorable solo." His distinctive style has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the landscape of metal guitar playing.
