KATSEYE’s ‘Gnarly’ Sparks Debate: Chart Success, Fan Reactions, and a Bold New Era
KATSEYE, the rising K-Pop group, is making waves with their latest single, "Gnarly." This track marks their first entry into the Billboard Hot 100, debuting at No. 92, less than a year after their debut. But the song's impact goes beyond chart success, igniting a passionate debate among fans and critics alike.

While "Gnarly" also debuted at No. 39 on Billboard's Global Excl. U.S. chart and No. 47 on the Global 200, the song's unconventional sound has proven to be divisive. The track, described as an edgy departure from their previous work like "Touch", features fuzzed-out vocals, a loud synthesizer, and even a cheeky "fuck!" prompting Teen Vouge to call it "polarizing."
Some fans have expressed disappointment, with one Genius commenter stating, "first and last listen I fear." Others questioned if the song was a joke or intentionally bad. However, the song also has its defenders, celebrating its infectious melody and bold departure from typical K-Pop sounds. As the group's member Manon said on Instagram Live, “If you get it, you get it, and if you don’t get it, kindly, get the fuck away from us.” The feistiness of this response highlights a distinct shift in the group's image.
The mixed reactions highlight a fascinating tension within the K-Pop landscape. As one article points out, K-Pop often smooths out the edges of various genres, creating its own unique version. "Gnarly," however, seems to lean more directly into the hyperpop sound, drawing comparisons to artists like Charli XCX and 100 Gecs. This bold move has challenged the expectations of some fans accustomed to a more polished sound.
KATSEYE's embrace of this chaotic energy is evident in their performances. Their live performance on Show! Music Core seemingly swayed many listeners, showcasing the song's charisma and energy. Furthermore, the group's collaboration with RuPaul's Drag Race royalty Gigi Goode for their Wango Tango performance added another layer of excitement and visual flair to the "Gnarly" era. Gigi Goode dressed the girls with an ethereal set of deconstructed white and earth tone drapery. "My goal was to do something fresh and light that the girls hadn’t been seen in before. I used a lot of elements from my latest collection, and twisted them into something with a lot of texture and movement to compliment the girls’ insane dance ability,” said Gigi Goode.
Looking forward, KATSEYE is clearly embracing this new direction. They're promising even more diverse and unexpected sounds on their forthcoming EP, *Beautiful Chaos*, with each song reportedly offering something different. The group highlights they feel lucky to explore the best of both worlds from thier label, HYBE and the States’ own Geffen.
"Gnarly" is more than just a song; it's a statement of intent. It's a declaration that KATSEYE is not afraid to experiment, to challenge expectations, and to embrace the beautiful chaos that comes with pushing boundaries. Whether you love it or hate it, "Gnarly" has undoubtedly put KATSEYE on the map, sparking a conversation about the evolution of K-Pop and the power of artistic reinvention.
