Katseye’s ‘Gnarly’ Divides the Internet: From ‘Atrocious’ to ‘Genius’

Katseye, the international girl group born from the collaboration between HYBE (of BTS fame) and Geffen Records, is making waves with their latest single, "Gnarly." The song, a bold departure from their previous sound, has sparked a fierce debate online, initially drawing criticism before unexpectedly winning over listeners with its unique hyperpop energy. But will that new sound and image be enough to cement their place in the hyper-competitive world of modern Pop music?

The group's journey began on the YouTube competition show Dream Academy, where six members – Daniela, Lara, Manon, Megan, Sophia, and Yoonchae – were selected from diverse backgrounds. Their debut EP, SIS (Soft Is Strong), featured the viral hit "Touch," showcasing a more conventional pop sensibility. However, "Gnarly" marks a distinct shift in direction.

Described as having "quaking 808s, gritty rave synths and a pugnacious attitude," "Gnarly" immediately polarized listeners. Some dismissed it as "genuinely fucking atrocious," while others gradually embraced its unconventional sound. The inclusion of the word "Tesla" (later replaced by "robotics" in the clean version) and the discovery that co-writer Alice Longyu Gao had previously used the intro in a TikTok video fueled the initial controversy.

The group seemed to anticipate the reaction, posting a TikTok video referencing Nicki Minaj's quote: "You're not gonna get this on the first time you hear it. After a second and third time, you can be like, whoa, what is this?"

A live performance on South Korean television appeared to sway some opinions, helping fans connect with the song's energy. Humberto Leon, former co-designer of Opening Ceremony and Kenzo, serves as the band's creative director, while Cody Critcheloe, known for his collaborations with Perfume Genius, directed the song's visuals, adding further credibility to Katseye's artistic vision.

Manon had warned fans about a potential shock in an interview with The Fader before the song's release and recently on May 7, KATSEYE revealed images and a video clip announcing their upcoming second EP “BEAUTIFUL CHAOS.” According to the group’s official website, the album embraces the key message of “celebrating confusion” and expresses the chaos in “various creative that comes with pushing the limits as an artist.” That album is set to be released on June 27th.

The band believes that "Gnarly" represents their true selves. "'Gnarly' feels true to us," Katseye said in a statement. "It's bold, it's fun, and it shows a different side of what we're about."

From initial rejection to potential anthem status, "Gnarly" has proven to be a divisive yet undeniably captivating release. The question remains: Will this bold move solidify Katseye's position as groundbreaking pop innovators? Or will it be remembered as a fleeting moment of internet chaos?
