John Legend Reflects on Kanye West’s ‘Descent’: From Collaborator to Controversial Figure
John Legend, in a recent interview, has opened up about his evolving relationship with Kanye West, offering a poignant reflection on West's transformation from a gifted collaborator to a figure mired in controversy. Legend's perspective provides unique insight into the trajectory of a once-close friendship and professional partnership.
Legend's association with West began when he signed with West's GOOD Music label. He reminisced about the early days, describing West as "very passionate, very gifted, and he had big dreams not only for himself but also for all the people around him." Legend's career received a significant boost through West's support, including a feature on Slum Village’s "Selfish" produced by West and the release of Legend's debut album, Get Lifted, on GOOD Music.

The two artists collaborated extensively, including on West’s "Blame Game." Legend acknowledges the impact West had on his career, recalling how labels that initially rejected him suddenly showed interest after the success of West's The College Dropout album. "Everyone wanted to know what was happening in our camp," Legend explained.
However, the relationship began to fray following West's support for Donald Trump, culminating in a complete falling out in 2022. Legend expressed his dismay at West's current trajectory, stating, "I didn’t see a hint of what we’re seeing now, his obsessions with antisemitism, anti-blackness, and it is sad to see his devolution."
While hesitant to psychoanalyze West, Legend suggests that the death of West's mother, Donda West, in 2007 marked a turning point. "I don’t think we’re qualified to psychoanalyze [West], but after his mother passed in 2007 there was definitely a difference," Legend noted, adding, "His descent started then and seems to have accelerated recently."
Legend's reflections paint a picture of a complex relationship impacted by personal loss, political differences, and perhaps, a divergence in values. The interview offers a somber look at the cost of fame and the challenges of maintaining relationships under intense public scrutiny.
