Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and the ‘I Wanna Play My Guitar’ Anthem: A Rock Reunion!

The track also features former Deep Purple frontman Glenn Hughes on vocals, adding another layer of legendary status to the mix.
According to Satriani, "I Wanna Play My Guitar" encapsulates the raw energy and aspirations he and Vai shared as teenagers. "This song depicts all that Joe and I used to think about as teenagers. All of the things we loved about pounding rock and roll and the glorious guitar," he explained. Vai echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the song is an absolute phenom for them to be able to present to you now our teenage aspirations in this song.
A Near Miss with Justin Hawkins
Interestingly, Satriani initially envisioned "I Wanna Play My Guitar" as a duet between Hughes and Justin Hawkins of The Darkness. However, scheduling conflicts prevented Hawkins' participation, paving the way for Hughes to take the lead.
"I got this crazy idea on the Monsters of Rock Cruise where Glenn and Justin were both performing," Satriani revealed. "Unfortunately, when I got back from the cruise I tested positive for COVID and I entered into a 10-day fog, forgetting if I had sent the invitations to collaborate."
