Foreigner’s Kelly Hansen Announces Departure: A New Era for the Rock Legends
After two decades of electrifying performances, Kelly Hansen, the voice of the iconic rock band Foreigner, has announced his departure. The news, revealed during an appearance on NBC’s "The Voice" on Tuesday, May 20, marks the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter for the band.
"Being the voice of Foreigner has been one of the greatest honors of my life," Hansen stated. "But it’s time to pass the mic." His final act will be the band's summer tour in 2025. Hansen will be succeeded by guitarist Luis Maldonado, who previously filled in on lead vocals during the band’s Latin American tour.
Mick Jones, Foreigner's co-founder and guitarist, praised Hansen's contribution: "Kelly Hansen is one of the best frontmen in our business, and over the last twenty years he has breathed new life into our songs." He also expressed his confidence in Maldonado, stating, "Luis has already shown us what he can do on lead vocals... He will soon lead the charge that will carry us forward to new heights."
Maldonado, who joined Foreigner in 2021, expressed his readiness to take on the responsibility: "This music has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I’m ready to honor Foreigner’s legacy and bring my heart to every performance."
The transition will be a collaborative effort, with both Hansen and Maldonado touring together through the summer of 2025, a "passing of the torch" moment for the band and its fans. The legendary Lou Gramm, Foreigner’s original lead singer, will also make special appearances as the band commemorates its50th anniversary in 2026.
Adding to the celebration, Foreigner's discography will soon be highlighted on a stage musical. "Feels Like The First Time - The Foreigner Musical" is set to debut in Long Island, New York in 2026 and incorporate 14 of the band's greatest hits.
While Hansen's departure marks a significant change, it is also seen as an opportunity for Foreigner to continue evolving and connecting with audiences. The band's enduring legacy, fueled by iconic hits like "I Want to Know What Love Is," "Hot Blooded," and "Feels Like the First Time," will undoubtedly continue to resonate with fans for years to come.
