Ashley McBryde: From Arkansas State Student to Grammy-Winning Doctor of Music
Ashley McBryde, the Grammy Award-winning country singer and songwriter, has added another impressive title to her name: Doctor. The Arkansas native received an honorary Doctorate in Music from Arkansas State University (ASU) at their spring commencement ceremony. This marks a full-circle moment for McBryde, who once walked the halls of ASU with dreams of becoming a band director.
McBryde's journey is a testament to following one's passion. Initially studying the French horn at ASU, she was encouraged by a professor to pursue a career in the music industry. A decision that has indisputably paid off.
"Earning a degree in music has always been something that I’ve placed a lot of value in,” McBryde stated. She also expressed her gratitude for the music education program at A-State, highlighting her time spent there as crucial in developing her passions for both performance and nurturing other musicians.
McBryde's career has skyrocketed since leaving ASU, culminating in a Grammy win in 2023 for Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “Never Wanted to Be That Girl” with Carly Pearce. She's also been nominated for a Grammy six other times. However, even with all the accolades, McBryde hasn't forgotten her roots.
In her commencement speech to ASU graduates, McBryde reflected on her journey: “This stage became my classroom. I left this campus as a broke, guitar-playing, song-writing chick who played in bars for a living. And I stand here today as a Grammy Award-winning songwriter, a member of the Grand Ole Opry.”
McBryde's Facebook post further emphasized her immense gratitude: “Honored doesn’t even begin to cover it… Arkansas State, thank you for recognizing a life dedicated to the pursuit of the magic of music.”
This honorary degree is not only a recognition of McBryde's musical talent but also a celebration of her perseverance and dedication. From studying French horn to gracing the stage of the Grand Ole Opry and winning a Grammy, Ashley McBryde's story is an inspiration to aspiring musicians everywhere.
