P1Harmony Achieves Milestone with ‘DUH!’: A Deep Dive into Their Hip-Hop Reinvention
P1Harmony is making waves in the K-pop scene with their latest mini album, 'DUH!' The six-member group is not only breaking records but also reinventing their sound, offering fans a fresh and experimental take on hip-hop. Let's delve into what makes this release so special.
The group's eighth mini album, 'DUH!', released on May 8th, marks a significant milestone in their career. According to Hanteo Chart, 'DUH!' sold an impressive 443,108 copies in its first week, surpassing their previous record of 335,930 copies with 'SAD SONG'. This surge in sales underscores the group's growing popularity and the strong reception of their new music.

What sets 'DUH!' apart is P1Harmony's bold decision to experiment with their sound. The album features six high-energy tracks, including 'Murmur,' 'Over and Over,' and 'Pretty Boy,' each showcasing the group's musical versatility. Jiung, Intak, and Jongseob contributed to the songwriting, while Keeho, Jiung, and Jongseob also participated in composing, highlighting the members' involvement in the creative process.
"We really wanted to try an old-school hip-hop sound because we have so much respect for the culture and where it came from," Jongseob explained. This desire to honor the roots of hip-hop while adding their own unique flair is evident in the title track, 'DUH!', which leans into an early 2010s dance-pop vibe. 'Murmur' offers a 90s-inspired fusion of R&B and hip-hop, demonstrating the group's ability to blend genres seamlessly.
Interestingly, the album was largely created while the group was on tour in Europe. "While we were in Europe, we were distributing parts (aka figuring out who’s doing what), coming up with new concepts and writing lyrics on planes and in between shows," Keeho revealed. This hectic creative process seems to have fueled their passion and resulted in a collection of tracks that exude confidence and energy.
One standout track, 'Pretty Boy,' tackles the topic of the feminization of East-Asian men through a Western lens. The members themselves actively reclaim the word “pretty,” embracing both the positive and negative aspects of the label. KEEHO explains "'Pretty Boy' had a deeper meaning for me when I created that song, because I really wanted to reclaim the word 'pretty.'"
With catchy melodies and thought-provoking lyrics, P1Harmony's 'DUH!' is poised to be a summer anthem. The group is already hinting at a new tour to showcase the album live. "We're definitely going to hit the road," says Keeho. "We purposely didn't perform a lot of the songs from [previous] albums on our last tour because we wanted to save them for what's coming next."
