Alice In Chains Tour Canceled: Drummer Sean Kinney’s Medical Emergency and Band’s Statement

Alice In Chains fans were met with disappointment recently as the band announced the cancellation of their upcoming tour and festival appearances. The reason? A medical emergency suffered by their longtime drummer, Sean Kinney. This news came shortly after the band canceled their May 8 performance at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, CT, where Kinney experienced what was described as a "non-life-threatening medical emergency" during soundcheck.

The band released a statement on social media, explaining the difficult decision. "After careful consideration and following the advice of medical professionals, we have made the decision to cancel our upcoming festival performance and the Alice in Chains headline shows," they wrote. "While we were all eager to return to the stage, Sean’s health is our top priority at this moment. Although the issue requires immediate attention, his long-term prognosis is positive."

Kinney himself addressed the situation in a statement, offering a glimpse into his experience. He humorously described going through the "5 Stages of Grief" after doctors advised against playing. "The outpouring of love, concern and well wishes has been both extremely humbling and very much appreciated," Kinney stated. He reassured fans, saying, "The good news is that I'm going to be fine and I'm going to live. The bad news (for some of you?) is that I'm going to be fine and I'm going to live."

The cancellation affects several scheduled performances, including appearances at festivals like MMR*B*Q, Sonic Temple, and Welcome to Rockville. However, as of now, their website indicates that they still plan to play Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne's "Back to the Beginning" show in July.

Social Distortion stepped in to fill Alice in Chains' slot at Welcome to Rockville, a testament to the music community's support during challenging times.

Alice in Chains, formed in Seattle in 1987, has had a remarkable career. The band has sold over 30 million records worldwide and received 11 Grammy nominations. Kinney, a founding member alongside Jerry Cantrell, has been a vital part of the band's sound and success. The current lineup also includes William DuVall and Mike Inez, who joined after the passing of Layne Staley and Mike Starr.

The band's decision to prioritize Kinney's health has been met with widespread support from fans. Many have expressed their well-wishes and appreciation for the band's commitment to its members.

This situation highlights the human element within the music industry and reminds us of the importance of health and well-being. While the tour cancellation is undoubtedly disappointing for fans, the focus now is on Sean Kinney's recovery.
