Lindsey Buckingham’s Verdict: Charli XCX’s ‘Von Dutch’ is ‘Kinda Saucy’
Former Fleetwood Mac legend Lindsey Buckingham has entered the world of YouTube reactions, and his latest target is none other than pop provocateur Charli XCX and her music video for "Von Dutch." Buckingham's surprisingly positive take is generating buzz, proving that generational divides can be bridged by a shared appreciation for artistic boundary-pushing.
Joined by his daughter Leelee on their YouTube series "Lindsey + Leelee React," the 75-year-old rock icon offered his commentary on the chaotic and energetic video. Before diving in, Leelee playfully asked her dad if he had a "BRAT" summer, to which he quipped, "The brattiest!"
The "Von Dutch" video, known for its disruptive scenes filmed at Charles de Gaulle airport, features Charli XCX wreaking havoc – from strutting and removing her pants to staging chaotic scenarios throughout the airport. Buckingham, initially unfamiliar with Charli's work beyond a performance on Saturday Night Live, quickly became engaged with the visual spectacle.
"She's getting kinda saucy already," Buckingham remarked early in the video clip. Later, as Charli bleeds and spits on the camera lens, he questions whether she "bled for real" and jokingly exclaimed "ouch!" and "ewww!".
Buckingham expressed surprise that the airport allowed such antics. "I'm surprised the airport let her do all this stuff,” he mused. "[To me] they would go, ‘Get away. Get out of here.'" Despite his initial shock at the video's brazenness, he concluded, "I thought it was very entertaining. There was so much going on, and all in the context of a normally restrictive environment." Buckingham interpreted Charli's message as a defiant "Screw you!" to the norm.
Beyond his YouTube ventures, Buckingham's music continues to resonate in unexpected ways. His classic hit "Holiday Road," known for its association with the *Vacation* movies, has been remixed for the trailer of *Nobody 2*, starring Bob Odenkirk.
Buckingham's willingness to engage with current pop culture and offer his perspective provides a refreshing glimpse into the mind of a music legend. His reaction to “Von Dutch” underscores the enduring appeal of artists who challenge conventions and push creative boundaries. What do you think of Buckingham’s reaction?
