Metallica’s ‘Load’ Album: Remastered Deluxe Box Set Unearths Hidden Gems

Get ready to revisit a pivotal era of Metallica! The band is set to release a remastered deluxe box set of their controversial yet influential sixth studio album, "Load". This isn't just a reissue; it's a deep dive into the years 1995-1997, offering fans a treasure trove of unreleased material and insights into the band's creative process during that time.

Kirk Hammett, Metallica's lead guitarist, recently unboxed the upcoming set, giving fans a sneak peek at what's to come. The deluxe edition, officially hitting stores on June 13th, boasts an impressive 301 recordings, with a staggering 245 of them previously unreleased. This massive collection is being dubbed "The Whole Kitchen Sink", reflecting its comprehensive nature.

The deluxe box set is more than just music; it’s a time capsule. Weighing in at over 10 pounds, it includes six vinyl records, 15 CDs, four DVDs, a 128-page book, and reproduced memorabilia. Fans can also look forward to standard 180g 2LP, CD, cassette, and digital versions, including a Spatial Audio mix using Atmos.

The remastered album was overseen by Greg Fidelman, with Reuben Cohen handling the remastering at Lurssen Mastering. Pre-orders of the deluxe box set unlock instant gratification tracks like "Until It Sleeps (Remastered)", showcasing the upgraded audio quality. Notably, the 2LP, 3CD, and deluxe digital versions will feature the extended version of "The Outlaw Torn" for the first time ever, previously edited due to CD time constraints.

The limited-edition box set offers a glimpse behind the scenes with unreleased demos, rough mixes, live performances, and on-air appearances. Highlights include a "Mama Said" picture disc, a 140g triple album recorded live at Lollapalooza in 1996, studio footage, and even the band's visit to Tuktoyaktuk, Canada for the Polar Beach Party. Memorabilia includes Rorschach Test cards, a Pushead patch, a Lollapalooza poster, a Rolling Stone cover reproduction, guitar picks, lyric sheets, and tour passes.

Originally released in 1996, "Load" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, holding the top spot for four weeks. The album represented a shift for Metallica, incorporating bluesier influences from bands like Led Zeppelin and AC/DC. While initially well-received, "Load" and its follow-up, "Reload", have since become subjects of debate among fans. However, band members like Lars Ulrich maintain that they are creatively on par with the band's other works.

Even within the band, "Load" has sparked controversy. James Hetfield has expressed his dislike for the album cover and its overall aesthetic, reflecting a period of experimentation for the band.

Whether you're a die-hard Metallica fan or a curious music enthusiast, the "Load" remastered deluxe box set offers a fascinating look into a transformative period for one of metal's biggest bands. With a wealth of unreleased material and behind-the-scenes insights, this collection promises to be a captivating experience. What are your thoughts on the "Load" era?
