Radiohead Reimagined: “Hamlet Hail to the Thief” Blends Shakespeare with Iconic Album

Is this the closest Radiohead fans will get to a reunion? Seven years have passed since the band last graced the stage, leaving many to wonder if they ever will again. Enter "Hamlet Hail to the Thief", a groundbreaking collaboration between Radiohead's Thom Yorke, the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), and other visionary artists.

The show, which premiered in Manchester, England, daringly reimagines Shakespeare's classic tale through the lens of Radiohead's 2003 album, "Hail to the Thief." For avid fans, it’s a chance to experience the band’s music in a completely new context, given their indefinite hiatus.

While "Hail to the Thief" might not be Radiohead's undisputed masterpiece, its potent lyrics and pervasive paranoia provide a surprisingly fitting backdrop for the world of Hamlet. Imagine the iconic riff of "There There" accompanying the arrival of Elsinore's residents on stage, or the haunting piano ballad "Sail to the Moon" soundtracking Ophelia's darkest moments. The synthesis of Yorke and Shakespeare creates moments of unexpected brilliance.

Not every combination is perfect. Some songs appear randomly, and the production sometimes prioritizes atmosphere over narrative coherence. However, the production largely capitalizes on the raw power of Radiohead’s music, creating an experience that resonates with fans of the band, if not always those of the Bard.

The show features Samuel Blenkin as Hamlet, delivering a compelling performance as the tormented prince. Paul Hilton’s portrayal of Claudius is equally captivating, depicting him as a guilt-ridden and twitchy figure. Christine Jones and Steven Hoggett (known for their work on "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child") co-directed the production, emphasizing music and visuals.

The actors slip into trance-like dance moves, choreographed to the deconstructed riffs of Radiohead songs. The music, supervised by Tom Brady, is performed by a live band, with vocalists Ed Begley and Megan Hill channeling Yorke's ethereal beauty. The set design, by AMP Scenography and Sadra Tehrani, creates an eerie and menacing atmosphere, though some critics note its similarity to other recent productions.

Ultimately, "Hamlet Hail to the Thief" is an ambitious undertaking that seeks to transcend language and distill the essence of Shakespeare's tragedy. While it may not completely succeed in that goal, it offers a compelling spectacle and a unique tribute to Radiohead's music.

The connections between Hamlet's themes of power, corruption, and lies and Radiohead's angry anthems are implicitly explored throughout the play. This bold interpretation invites both Shakespeare and Radiohead fans to experience familiar works from all new angles.

Will this production pave the way for The Tempest Kid A or The Taming of the Shrew OK Computer? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain: "Hamlet Hail to the Thief" sparks conversation and pushes the boundaries of what's possible when music and theater collide. What do you think of this fusion?
